Miss Wendy has been a Montessori-trained private reading tutor for over 35 years, teaching many students ages 4 to adult. She is also the author of Miss Wendy’s Favorite Phonetic Books, including 18 phonics books. She has developed the Miss Wendy’s Reading Phone, which helps young children to increase their reading fluency and comprehension. She has done extensive research on learning disabilities, specifically dyslexia, and has taught many dyslexic students. Miss Wendy teaches classes to help support parents as they teach their children to read, entitled, “Miss Wendy’s Reading Tips & Tricks for Parents”.

For a small hourly fee, you and Miss Wendy will discuss your concerns about your child’s literacy needs. Click at the bottom of this page to contact Miss Wendy’s directly and request more information about what she can offer you, based on your needs and the needs of your child. ***In-Person Assessments are available in Southern Idaho, Northern and Central Utah and in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
What you can expect from your Private Consultation with Miss Wendy via a Phone Call or Video Conference:
• Miss Wendy will listen to your concerns with your child’s literacy challenges and discuss how best to approach these issues. She will partner with you in developing an action plan to assist you as you continue to work with your child.
• Miss Wendy will answer questions about what to look for if you suspect a possible learning disability, as well as offer guidance when seeking out professionals for diagnostic and other support. ***Miss Wendy is not a doctor, and therefore cannot diagnose learning disabilities.
• Miss Wendy will offer valuable advice that is very helpful when negotiating your child’s needs in a public school. She has experience in crafting IEPs and 504s on behalf of her students.
• Miss Wendy has developed simple, reading games and activities that can be made at home. She will explain how you can help your child get excited for reading time using these games, and how they can benefit your child’s specific literacy needs.
• Miss Wendy can answer commonly asked questions that she has received over the years from many parents, such as:
—How do I help my child learn the difference between “b” and “d” (or “p” and “q”)? Miss Wendy has a method she can share with you, and it works!
—How do I know when my child is ready for the next reading level?
—How can I increase my child's reading fluency or reading comprehension?
—How can I help my child's spelling and word building?
—How can I make the process of learning the letter sounds more FUN for me and for my child?
—What are the three essentials when teaching a child with learning disabilities? Hint…they’re great for all learning styles!
• Miss Wendy will be happy to answer any further questions you may have. She will offer more advice, as well as strategies for your needs and the needs of your child.
What you can expect from an In-Person Assessment for you and your child:
• In addition to offering the above as needed, Miss Wendy will meet with both you and your child. This will most likely take place at your local library. Miss Wendy requires that a parent or guardian be present for the full assessment. Miss Wendy will complete a thorough assessment of your child’s reading skills, using her own materials—and she may request that your child bring a book that they are comfortable reading.
• Miss Wendy will test for the following:
—Letter sound knowledge. Miss Wendy tests all ages, beginning with the basics of literacy skills, including the letter sounds. It’s surprising how many older students, and even adults, have gaps in their most basic reading skills that need to be addressed before moving on!
—Phonogram knowledge. Miss Wendy tests for accurate pronunciation of phonograms, independent of the words. She will test for over 60 of the most commonly used phonograms.
—Spelling/word building skills.
—Basic knowledge of common sight words.
—Reading fluency skills.
—Reading comprehension skills.
During and after the testing, Miss Wendy will give her assessment and offer advice. She will help you develop an action plan—detailing how you can move forward with your child’s literacy needs. This includes what you can do at home to help them enrich their literacy skills. She will also give suggestions for professionals if needed, such as a doctor or therapist, school counselor, private tutor, etc.
You Will Have Support from Miss Wendy
Miss Wendy would like you to feel free to discuss your questions and concerns during your consultation or assessment. Miss Wendy will listen compassionately and be sensitive to your needs.
This is a partnership between you and Miss Wendy to help assess your child’s literacy skills and any needs that they may have. Miss Wendy will offer advice and strategies to help your child succeed, as you choose to implement this action plan at your sole discretion.

Pricing Information :
Private Phone or Video Consultation—
This is a thorough consultation, and is typically 1.5 - 2 hours. The first hour’s payment will be required in advance.
Fee: $40/hour, the first hour is non-refundable. Additional time will be billed in 30 minute increments.
In-Person Assessments—
These are exclusively available in Southern Idaho, Northern and Central Utah and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Miss Wendy will meet with both you and your child for an in-depth assessment, which is typically 2 - 3 hours. The first hour’s payment will be required in advance.
Fee: $40/hour, the first hour is non-refundable. Additional time will be billed in 30 minute increments. There will also be a non-refundable travel fee, paid in advance, not to be greater than $60, and to be determined by travel distance.

No-Show Fee Information:
Cancellations or rescheduling request made less than 24 hours before your consultation or assessment appointment will be subject to the following fees:
No-show Fee: In the event of a no-show, for either the Private Consultation or the In-Person Assessment, the original advanced payment of $40 we’ll be retained. Miss Wendy will be happy to reschedule the appointment as needed, for an additional 1 hour upfront fee.
No-Show Travel Fee: Miss Wendy will assess a reasonable travel fee at her sole discretion.
If you are not present at the agreed-upon location for the In-Person Assessment appointment, Miss Wendy will make three attempts to contact you at your provided phone number. After the third attempt (approximately 15 min past the appointed time), your appointment will be considered canceled as a no-show, and the Travel Fee will be retained. If the appointment is rescheduled, and additional upfront Travel Fee will be required.
